10/11/2013 - Transverse Process

"I’ve had 36 orthopedic operations, have two fused ankles, my knees, hands and wrists don’t work, I now have a fused spine, other than that, everything is great." ~Bill Walton

Mike Monterusso will lead "Transverse Process" with an estimated duration of 2.5 hours.

Meet at 6:30 pm at the Glen Alps parking area. We’ll ascend the Little O’Malley saddle and bushwhack a course roughly parallel to the Middle Fork trail. We’ll cross the Williwaw Lakes trail and consider ascending Rusty Peak, then return via the Middle Fork trail.

Post Report

A group of four runners and two black dogs (one of which is suspected to be part bear) departed the Glen Alps parking lot (air temp was 36F), making our way across the valley and up to the O’Malley ridge line. Extremely muddy conditions gave way to blustery winds and blowing snow, with the trail surface being solid snow up and over the ridge. Winds were surprising high along the ridge and on the “football field”. In an actual football game, assuming we won the coin toss, I’d elect to kick with the wind on this day. Due to time constraints, the group split up and took separate routes out of the Williwaw Lakes valley, returning via the Middle Fork trail. Some bushwhacking was required to navigate out of the valley. The Rusty Peak ridge line was not ascended on this day. That may be an option best left for the longer days of summer.
