09/05/2013 - Brushing Up

“I’ve been doing a lot of abstract painting lately, extremely abstract. No brush, no paint, no canvas, I just think about it.” ~ Stephen Wright

Rob DeVelice will lead "Brushing Up" with an estimated duration of 2 hours.

Meet at 6:30 pm in the “Weeping Wall” parking area (just east of McHugh Creek) on the Seward Highway. We will seek and follow paths of least resistance in potentially a loop configuration below Black Mesa.

Post Report

Many of the “paths of least resistance” that Jesse, Eliseo, Mike, Jack, and I encountered were aggressive in limiting our forward progress. I had hoped we would find a continuous network of game trails through the brush and fallen trees leading to Black Mesa, but such was not the case. Numerous devils club thickets and jack-strawed logs with flesh penetrating branches covered the rolling ridgetop ascent route.

In contrast, the loop descent to the Turnagain Arm Trail was mostly pleasant bushwacking through broadleaf forests, often on stabilized scree. We found a straight-forward way through the trees to avoid a vertical descent off a cliff.
